Archbishop Exner was born on December 24th, 1928 into a
farming family at Killaly, Saskatchewan. He worked for four years on the family farm
before going on to high school, attending the first St. Joseph's College in
Yorkton,
Saskatchewan, and later St. Thomas College in Battleford, Saskatchewan.
The future Archbishop entered the Oblate Fathers in 1950 and made his
novitiate at St. Norbert, Manitoba. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1957. He received
Masters degrees in philosophy and theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in
Rome and holds a Doctoral degree in theology from the University of Ottawa.
Father Exner served as professor, rector and superior at St. Charles
Scholasticate in Battleford, and as professor of moral theology at Newman Theological
College in Edmonton.
He was appointed Bishop of Kamloops in 1974, and Archbishop of Winnipeg
in 1982.
Archbishop Exner is a member of the Sacred Congregation for Bishops. At
the national level, he is a member of the Permanent Council of the Canadian Conference of
Catholic Bishops, and a member of the Social Communications Commission.
He is past member of the CCCB's Theology and Christian Education
Commissions, and a member of the National Catholic-Lutheran dialogue.
Archbishop Exner was appointed Archbishop of Vancouver on May 25, 1991.
Upon reaching the mandatory age of retirement for Archbishops he retired in
January of 2004
